Nonny: Unshown & Unfound

What would you do if you were fourteen years old and you had no super-power?
Paley Curtis is a smart, resourceful girl living in a world where everyone has a talent, but not her. Maybe she’s late, but as the days go by, it seems less and less certain that her talent will show. Then a chance encounter with a crazy man confronting the police sets her on a path to finding more about this man and his “super” talent while coming to realize that her best friend Jen is starting to exhibit a higher-than-normal talent as well. Paley meets new people, digs up new information, and slowly uncovers a depth to talents that few know exist. Meanwhile she juggles her friends and enemies in eighth grade and deals with the increasing pressure of people vying for her time, while living day to day in the poorest part of the city, just trying to grow up. Nonny Book One: UNSHOWN takes Paley from school dances and carefree days to serious decisions and life-altering events. The story concludes in Nonny Book Two: UNFOUND.

Refreshingly for the genre, these powers are just an everyday part of people’s lives, casually woven into the story … the curious mystery and compelling worldbuilding is enough to make this a worthwhile read.

What would you do if you were fifteen years old and you still had no super-power?

Paley Curtis, now fifteen and accepting of the fact that she has no talent in a world where everyone has a super-power, grinds through a summer job with a mysterious company spying on her every move. The days pass by as she learns about those with “super” talents and who has control over them. The persistence of the corporation—which has become too powerful in its capture and detention of super talented people—drives Paley to find clever ways to evade her trackers, while spying back on her personal spies. Finally, she embarks on a risky plan, setting out to find her missing friend and solve the mystery that started in “Nonny Book One: UNSHOWN.”

Paley may be quiet and unassuming, but her tenacity and bravery puts her on a path to bring about lasting change and justice for her friends, her family, and those unfairly imprisoned.

A genre-bending mystery at its best when showcasing its relatable young protagonist.
